My Services
Parenting comes with all kinds of challenges and joys. Being a step-parent myself, I have faced many obstacles while fostering loving relationships with my children. Combining my experiences as a step-parent, with training in family therapy and filial play therapy, and extensive experience doing home-based family therapy, I offer a collaborative, supportive and structured approach that can support you in your own parenting. Through child parent relational work you will learn how to offer care, encouragement, and limits to your child, enriching your relationship with them and helping your child succeed in the future!
Supporting others through the mental health process can be isolating and stressful. Navigating the stories we hear and creating space for others to heal can be a lot of us as professionals to carry. We also have our own “things” that can be impacting us on a personal and professional level.
Through my own experiences I have seen the value of having my own counselor to help me navigate our profession. Counseling counselors is different from clinical supervision, yet it can still help you grow to be the clinician you want to be. This will focus more on who you are as a person. By integrating my experiences as a client, counselor, supervisor, and counselor educator, I aim to provide mental health professionals with a similar support that they want to offer their clients.
In my 15 years of experience I have encountered individuals facing depression, anxiety, substance use, grief and loss, and trauma. In all of these encounters, my clients reported our relationship being the most important factor in their success. My approach to counseling focuses on working with you as a whole, not a series of symptoms. The foundation of my work is on establishing a meaningful, genuine, supportive, and collaborative relationship where I tailor treatment to meet your needs. I am devoted to providing you a safe, accepting, and confidential environment that will allow for authentic expression and exploration to occur. Through our interactions and experiences I will offer honest feedback to help you better understand yourself and your experiences, while building on your strengths to help you thrive.
I have also witnessed how difficult it can be at times to find the words to make sense of situations and express oneself fully. To further tailor my treatment to meet your needs, I may invite the use of arts and creativity to assist you in meeting your goals.
If my approach sounds like the kind of support you are looking for, please do not hesitate to reach out!
All services are provided via secure telehealth in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Soon the Counseling Compact will allow for more of my services in other states.
Clinical Supervision & Consultation
Whether you are a brand new counselor or an established one, supervision and consultation are useful for all. I will work with you to build on your strengths as a clinician, assist in your conceptual skills, and intervention ideas, while offering honest feedback to help you become the mental health professional you want to be. I am registered to provide clinical supervision for counselors in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
I am also a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor(RPT-S), have specialty in expressive arts and can help those wanting to reach their RPT credential.
Because this would be independently contracted, my role is solely offering clinical supervision, not administrative supervision.
Hello, I am Andy
(he/him), PhD, LPCC, LPC, RPT-S, ADS
I am a partner, a step-parent, a counselor, and a counselor educator. Spending the last 15 years offering mental health counseling services and 10 years teaching mental health counselors, I decided to expand and open my own small telehealth practice.
I began my career as a mental health counselor in 2010 providing intensive in-home counseling services in Virginia to individuals and families. Through my early career experiences I quickly learned the value of working with the the systems that impact us as well as the person holistically. This means building on your interests and strengths to help you express and understand yourself fully. To better serve my clients, I expanded my expertise into the use of play and expressive arts to benefit my clients. It was also during this time I had the opportunity to supervise my first practicum student, which inspired me to pursue my PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision.
While obtaining my PhD in Wyoming, I was also part of a small private practice. Focus on offering preventative care working with children and their parents, I also worked with individuals across the lifespan. I also provided intensive outpatient services, running groups and offering individual counseling for individuals navigating their recovery from substance use. After graduating from the University of Wyoming, it was important to me to get back to my Midwest roots, where I was fortunate enough join University of Wisconsin-Stout and teach in their Clinical Mental Health Counseling program.
Growing up in Madison, WI, the Midwest has a special place in my heart. I now live in Saint Paul, MN and continue to teach future mental health counselors while offering clinical services in the community. I am licensed in both Minnesota (#05130) and Wisconsin (#6256-125). When I am not working, I love spending time with my partner, our two adult daughters, and extended family. I enjoy exploring what the twin cities area has to offer while also venturing into the woods, and traveling when possible. I also partake in some photography (all the pictures here are my own, even the self-portraits(it was weird)).
As a person and a professional, I strive to be viewed as an advocate. I work to address the social injustices that are impacting you and support you to help you thrive. To better serve you, I work to understand your cultural needs while creating a space that is based on authenticity, genuine connection, and open communication, and humor to make sure your needs are being met.
I am happy to talk more about myself, my approach, my services and discuss if we might be a good fit. Please use the link below to schedule a free consult. I look forward to connecting with you!
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the initial free consult and assessment?
The initial 20-30 minute free consult is a chance for us to get to know one another more and determine if I might be the right fit for you. If you choose to work with me, we will set up our assessment where I explain about privacy and confidentiality, learn more about who you are, your experiences, and what you want to work on.
Most assessments can be completed within 60 minutes.
Sometimes the initial assessment can take longer, so we can schedule a follow-up meeting before collaboratively putting together a plan for our work.
How long are your sessions?
After the initial assessment is complete all sessions are 50 minutes.
What are your fees?
Aside from the free 20-30 minute consult, all sessions (individual, child parent relational), including the initial assessment are $150/session.
Supervision and consultation fees will vary depending on time and content. We will discuss this in our initial free consult.
Do You Accept Insurance?
No, I am a cash only provider.
It may be possible for you to receive reimbursement from your insurance company and it will be important for you to consult with your insurance provider. I can provide you with a superbill for reimbursement.
What about privacy and confidentiality
Your privacy and confidentiality are of the utmost importance. Sharing about yourself with someone else can be scary and I want to make sure you feel safe, supported, and cared for.
All that you share with me is confidential and private, with a few legal and safety exceptions, which we can discuss in our consult and review in my confidentiality and informed consent agreement should you decide to work with me. I can be sure to address any additional questions you may have.
How many times and how frequent will we be meeting?
The easy answer is “it depends.”
Generally, we can plan to meet on a weekly basis, however some people may not feel the need to meet that often.
As far as for how many sessions, this will be something we regularly revisit related the progress you are making with our established goals. Once the initial assessment is done, we will work together on the goals you have with our time together and we will use those to guide our journey together.
Can you tell me more about your approach?
Being greatly influenced by Adlerian Psychology and Interpersonal Processes, I fundamentally believe many of the challenges we face are rooted in our relationships and the systems that impact us. Further understanding the ways in which we are affected by others and noting where we have influence are essential to helping us thrive. I often view the shared space that we create together as a rehearsal to helping you become more of the person you want to be with yourself and with others. I will invite feedback and exploration of the interactions and exchanges we have with one another to help create a safe environment that will allow you to express yourself fully and support you as you progress towards becoming the person you want to be. If you are so inclined, we can invite in expressive art modalities to allow for other forms of expression to occur. I have special training in Sandtray, which is the use of miniatures and sand to create scenes of situations and scenarios. If you have more questions about me or my approach, please feel free to reach out!
